Laura
Mulvey’s theory applies to the music videos “Dirty” and “Do it Like a Dude”
because both videos invite the audience to view the artists as objects of
desire. This is done through the
camera shots and angles used, the fact the video is presented in a voyeuristic
way to the audience, and the way the artist interacts with others in the video.
In
Christina Aguilera’s video of “Dirty” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze
by making the point of intrest on her most of the time. For example she is
always in the middle of the screen and she has a spotlight on her to make her
stand out more over all the other people.
The
audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because Cristina is wearing very
little clothing. She also shows off pasts of her body in such a way it will
give pleasure to some of the viewers, this occurs all the way through the
video. This makes her the center of attention as she is the one showing off the
most out of all the actors.
The
actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an
object of desire. This occurs at multiple points in the video but a good
example is when there are 3 girls dancing on podiums and all of the men are
just watching them while dancing. Another example is when Cristina is in the
boxing ring and the audience is mostly men watching her, like she is an
object.
In Jesse
J’s video of “Do it Like a Dude” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze by having
her lips in the middle of the screen a lot, her black lips with spikes in. Showing your lips is a very sexual move, and it it showing off that they have good lips.
The
audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because Jessie is wearing little clothing along with the other girls in this video. she alos shows off many parts of her body in the music video in such a way it gives pleasure to some of the viewers.
The
actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an
object of desire. This occurs at a few points in this video, But mostly when jessie is showing off her lips.
The
target audience for these two artists is young females. However, the way they represent
themselves as sexual objects does not appeal to young girls, it appeals more to
men. I believe Christina Aguilera
and Jesse J choose to represent themselves like this because it earns them more money if they have men and women waching and not just women.
